let's stay with books about the arctic for a while. swedish forester, author and painter albert viksten (1889-1969) wrote several popular books about life and wildlife in northern scandinavia and beyond, published in german by the büchergilde gutenberg.

dresden-based painter fritz winkler (1894-1964) contributed nice ink brush drawings (similar to famous expressionist emil nolde's). also the title and author's name on the cover and title page are in a hand-written script. the bold and large sans-serif titles and page numbers – inspired by "new typography" – go well with the drawings.

in 1929 the "50 most beautiful books" competition was held for the first time. this book was among the winners.
