book (design) story #125
oskar howald:
die bauernlandi in luzern
sla, luzern, 1955
size: ?? x ?? cm
designer: blaise bron
this book is about a swiss exhibition of the farming industries which took place in luzern in 1954.
generally, farmers are said to have a rather conservative cultural taste – retro rather than modernist.
so it seems rather surprising that they accepted this modernist, asymmetrical "swiss new new typography" book design. luzern-based graphic designer blaise bron (1918-2004) is also featured in book 91, with industrial designs for a (probably related) company called bron elektronik ag.
the handicraft shown in the photos is in a different, vernacular style.
