book (design) story #132
paul renner:
das moderne buch
jan thorbecke verlag, lindau/bodensee, 1947
printer: robert bardtenschlager, reutlingen
size: 20 x 13 cm
designer: paul renner
the publication featured in book story 1 made paul renner (1878-1956) a persona non grata during the nazi years: he lost his job in 1933, although later on he was again allowed to publish some articles and a book on typography (see book story 45).
after the war, renner expressed his ideas for a modern book design in this booklet. you find an excellent summary and commentary in chris burke's book on renner (isbn 9781568981581).
not surprisingly, the typeface is renner's futura.
the impressum on the last page shows the authorisation by the gmfzo
– the military government of the french zone of occupation.
