ernst baumann:
neue gärten – new gardens
editions girsberger, zürich, 1955
printer: keller & cie. ag, luzern
size: 23 x 29 cm
designer: karl mannhart
ernst baumann (1907-1992) founded his own gardening company in 1928, and later became one of switzerland's most influential garden designers.
girsberger, a leading publisher of books on modern architecture, brought out this book by baumann in 1955. the book design is similar to other girsberger publications: landscape format, beige cloth cover, "swiss style" typography with akzidenz-grotesk titles.
green writing is an obvious idea for a book on gardens.
the lowercase "neue/new" in the title reminds of karl gerstner's style (see stories 15, 5, 16).
the bilingual text runs in two wide columns.
margins are extremly narrow, like in the previous book.
the layout is based on a square grid pattern.
