marianne raschig:
hand und persönlichkeit
gebrüder enoch verlag, hamburg, 1931
printer: waldheim-eberle a.g., wien
size: 24 x 17 cm
designer: cesar domela
marianne raschig published this two-volume book about palmistry in 1931. the stunning dustjackets are designed (and signed) by cesar domela-nieuwenhuis (1900-1992), a dutch artist who was part of the de stijl group and the "ring neuer werbegestalter" he co-founded. above the back and front of the almost identical jakets which are signed "cesare(!) domela" on the rear panel.
the bookbinding and ...
.... typography are tasteful, but conventional. there are two volumes: one with an amazing collection of famous people's handprints – mostly writers, actors, artists, scientists, and politicians –, and one with commentary texts.
here we see the palms and signatures of wilhelm ostwald (left) and albert einstein (right).
