book (design) story #164
jan tschichold:
schriftschreiben für setzer
klimsch, frankfurt am main, 1931
size: 15 x 21 cm
designer: jan tschichold
jan tschichold (1902-1974) published this instructional booklet on hand lettering for typesetters in 1931. the cover title is typical for tschichold's style of that time: asymmetric arrangement, contrasting type (light/bold), and a semicolon after the author's name.
the whole book is set in a modern sans-serif (paul renner's futura), however it covers lettering in all sorts of historical styles. unlike many other avant-garde typographer jan tschichold had received formal training in calligraphy and typography (under walter tiemann in leipzig).
on the wrapper's inside there are ads for two of tschichold's books: for the one featured in story 129 and for "foto-auge", a book still missing in this collection because i haven't found an affordable copy yet ...
