jakob bührer (1882-1975) was a socialist writer who was at one time married to the author of book 20. in his novel "man kann nicht..." (one can not...) he describes the life of a working class lad who tries to become a bourgeois entrepreneur, but finally realises that one can not escape his class...

the book design by walter roshardt (1897-1966), a teacher at the kunstgewerbeschule zürich, is moderately modernist. quite striking how the large white and small black letter "n" on the jacket front correspond, and how the black "n" is repeated on the jacket spine. the use of a small "e" instead of dots für "ü" is also often seen in designs by max bill's (see story 19).

zurich publishers oprecht and helbling supported socio-critical, leftist, anti-fascist books in the 1930s – see e.g. book stories 20, 74.
