this is a german translation of part three of john dos passos' classic trilogy "u.s.a.": "the big money" was first published in 1936, this first german translation came out two years later. no idea why the title was changed to "the big shadow".

this is among the earliest designs by richard paul lohse (1902-1988) for the büchergilde. the jacket photomontage is again obviously inspired by john heartfield whom lohse admired (also see books 35, 188).

the diagonally set sans-serif title lines of the jacket are repeated on the cover ...

... and on the title page. the column titles are set in the same sans-serif.
