the "mei" (may) of this monthly published by the catholic organisation "de gemeenschap" (the community) in utrecht (holland). many issues had a remarkably modernist design. this great cover for the may 1930 number was designed (and signed) by paul schuitema (1897-1973). the cascade of black and red typeset lines maybe influenced this later jacket by lohse.
the title page. the ad of the printers lumax on the inner cover says: verzorgt ook dit tijdschrift (also responisble for this periodical).
uppercase titles in bold sans-serif and thick rules are early new typography style.
