book (design) story #279
wilhelm bickel:
bevölkerungsgeschichte und bevölkerungspolitik in der schweiz
büchergilde gutenberg, zürich, 1947
printer: buchdruckerei berichthaus, zürich
size: 24 x 17 cm
designer: richard paul lohse (jacket)
another jacket richard paul lohse (1902-1988) designed for the büchergilde's scientific book series: wilhelm bickel (1903-1977) was a professor for statistics at the university of zurich, and this book is about demographic policy in switzerland.
lohse's striking jacket design shows some of his trademark ingredients: pictorial "overprinting montage" of a diagram and a b/w photograph printed in a strong colour – similar to this catalogue cover. the typeface is akzidenz-grotesk semibold , as usual.
the cover and inner pages are designed like other books of this series (see story 278), not by lohse. the page below is about annual birthrates in switzerland which dropped from 28 per 1000 inhabitants in 1900 to 15 in 1940. and today? less than 10 newborn babies per 1000 inhabitants in 2006!
