book (design) story #321
bernhard kellermann:
die stadt anatol
s. fischer, berlin, 1932
size: 21 x 13 cm
designer: georg salter (jacket)
another novel by german writer bernhard kellermann (1879-1951) who came to fame with his bestseller "der tunnel" (see story 167). the town of anatol is a novel about the impact of the oil industry on a rural community in turkey.
this first edition and the aforementioned "tunnel" reedition share a similar cover design.
the dustjacket is by georg salter (1897-1967) in realistic painted style: the black cloud over the oil rigs and "dirty" title typeface is of a drastic ugliness, however an eyecatcher in the book shop – i.e. the purpose of the book jacket according to salter.
the book typography is traditional, in a fraktur typeface. there is a leaflet laid in announcing the publisher's new editions.
