after his studies at the bauhaus in weimar, werner graeff (1901-1978) became a leading avantgarde photographer in germany. his 1929 book "es kommt der neue fotograf" (not featured yet) is a classic.

like many other modernists, graeff left germany after hitler seized power – first to spain, and then to switzerland where he settled in the canton of ticino.

in 1942 graeff published this second comprehensive handbook on photography.

"camera and eye" was designed by the author, using bodoni in a two-column layout.

interestingly, graeff uses drawings rather than photos to explain techniques.
