book (design) story #41
erich grisar:
mit schreibmaschine und kamera durch europa
der bücherkreis gmbh, berlin, 1932
size: 24 x 17 cm
designer: jan tschichold
erich grisar (1898-1955) was a working-class writer (and photographer) from dortmund. the book is his reportage of a journey through europe, "with a camera and a typewriter" in his luggage, as the title suggests.
the book is another great example of jan tschichold's (1902-1974) designs for the socialist book club "der bücherkreis". paul renner's futura rules.
the gravure-printed photographs are full bleeds, with captions copied into the pictures. the photos show not just tourist sights, but also workers, factories, mines, beggars, and karl marx's grave. below a photo of the spectacular transporter bridge in marseille (destroyed in ww2).
