after 1933 modernist designer, author, and photo pioneer werner graeff (1901-1978) published (and probably also designed) a series of booklets on "peole at work" before leaving germany for spain and finally switzerland.

volume 6 was about "the printer". the asymmetric title layout and bold page numbers are modernist, however the blackletter typeface reveals germany's post-1933 zeitgeist. the foreword was written by eduard wilhelm tieffenbach (1883-1948), founder of the "officina serpentis" press.

the text and photographs are credited to "peterhans". walter peterhans (1897-1960) was a teacher at the bauhaus dessau and later at graeff's fotoschule berlin. in 1938 he emigrated to the states.

interestingly, for the section about proofreader's marks a sample text about the virtues of undecorated, modernist architecture is used (maybe by adolf loos?) – set in sans-serif!
