büchergilde gutenberg, zürich, 1947
printer: berichthaus zürich
size: 22 x 13 cm cm
designer: richard paul lohse, josef twerenbold (jacket of volume 2)
here the last example in our little series of book designs by richard paul lohse (1902-1988) – at least for now ...
swiss writer felix moeschlin (1882-1969) wrote this two-volume history of the famous railway tunnel through the gotthard.
lohse designed the first volume of 1947, with a photomontage of a rock with 19th century coins.
the second volume, published in 1949, came with a slightly changed jacket design by josef twerenbold, based on the same rock.
the design of the inner pages is identical for both volumes. the title spread's asymmetrical composition is typical for lohse. below a picture of alfred escher (1819–1882), the "railway king of switzerland".
