here a classic example of 1950s swiss book design in the modernist "neue grafik" style: square format, multi-column pages with asymmetric titles, and sans-serif type throughout.
the book is about the world chess tournament 1959 in zürich.
the book was designed by rolf schroeter (*1932) who had studied at the hfg ulm and worked as a typographic designer for artemis verlag.
schroeter, a well-known photographer today, is also credited for the cover photo, ...
... while the other photos are by rob(ert) gnant (*1932).
the introductory text was written by alois nagler (1907-1996), at the time president of the schachgesellschaft zürich.
"weltschachturnier" won a "most beautiful books of switzerland" award.
