book (design) story #484
marinus jan granpré molière:
bouwkunst en verwante kunsten
stedelijk museum, amsterdam, 1935
size: 21 x 15 cm
designer: willem sandberg
this is the catalogue of an 1935 exhibition on architecture and related arts in amsterdam.
the cover is unmistakably the style of dutch graphic designer and museum man willem sandberg (1897-1984), signed lower left. note the informal "soft edge" design so typical for sandberg: the leaf overlapping a rectangular window or floor plan, combined with modernist typography, seems to symbolise modernist architecture's openness to surrounding nature.
this fine early brochure is not documented in the great sandberg catalogue by petersen/brattinga (isbn 9012505320).
the exhibition was organised on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the "architectura et amicitia" society.
note the initial "z" – stenciled from a photo of a building.
dutch architect marinus jan grandpré molière (1883-1972) contributed the introductury text.
above left a photo of rotterdam station, ...
... and here a modernist chair designed by dutch pioneer j. j. oud.
