book (design) story #496
kurt wilhelm-kästner:
das münster in essen
fredebeul & koenen verlag, essen, 1929
size: 28 x 24 cm
photographer: albert renger-patzsch
designer: max burchartz
kurt wilhelm-kästner (1893-1976) is the author ...
...of this monograph ...
... on the essen minster.
it was first published in 1929, ...
this copy is from the 1930 second printing.
as stated prominently on the first page after the title, the book was designed by modernist graphic design pioneer and artist max burchartz (1887-1961) ...
... with photographs by albert renger-patzsch (1897-1966).
wilhelm, burchartz and renger were all working at the folkwang school/museum in essen.
burchartz' book design is a nice example of "new typography": the last line of paragraphs is set flush-right, as seen in other modernist books of that time – see stories 46 and 49.
renger's photos of the minster which was heavily damaged in ww2 are of an impressive (print) quality.
