reneé brand (1900-1980) emigrated from germany to switzerland and in 1941 to the u.s. where she became a psychologist. her first book no man's land, published by oprecht in 1940, describes the tragedy of jewish and other refugees from germany being rejected at the "european" border.

i read somewhere that the book was forbidden by the swiss censors in ww2 (but don't know for sure)!

... is credited to austrian artist and graphic designer johannes troyer (1902-1969). in 1938 troyer and his jewish wife emigrated from innsbruck to liechtenstein, in 1949 he left for the u.s. but returned to innsbruck in 1962.
