book (design) story #531
henry hoek:
st. moritz / dorf / bad / campfèr
orell füssli verlag, zürich / leipzig, 1931
size: 16 x 10 cm
photographer: albert steiner
designer: alex walter diggelmann (cover)

this is the original german version of the st. moritz tourist guide featured in story 460. it sports a different cover, a map of the st. moritz area designed in a crude "elemental typography" style. next to the blue lake i notice the signature "dig", referring to alex walter diggelmann (1902-1987). diggelmann also designed great tourist posters for st. moritz in the swiss hyperrealist style of the 1920-30s, see e.g. here.

inside the book is very similar to the later english version. author henry hoek (1878-1951) was a german skiing pioneer who wrote several books on the subject.

famous albert steiner (1877-1965) contributed some photos, and there are a couple of foldout panoramic drawings, also designed by a.w diggelmann according to the impressum.

note the rounded corners of the booklet, to make it better fit the pocket. this ad for the competing skiing location of davos is quite striking!
