arthur holitscher (1869-1941) was the son of a wealthy jewish merchant in budapest. he is best known for his travel books, and this one echoes his 1912 success "america today and tomorrow". in nazi germany holitscher's books were blacklisted. he emigrated to paris and finally geneva where he died.
