book (design) story #568
leopold hess:
die zentralschweiz – vierwaldstätter see
schweizerische verkehrszentrale, zürich, around 1934
printer: graphische anstalt c.j. bucher ag., luzern
size: 18 x 12 cm
photographer: matter, gaberell, mittelholzer
designer: herbert matter
another tourist brochure from the series introduced in story 563; as the signature on the cover suggests, ...
... this one about "central switzerland" was designed by herbert matter (1907-1984). paul renner (1878-1956) had been involved in the typographic concept of the series, and he reproduced this example in book 45.
again witty spreads like the one below with the caption "two kinds of standing timber", ...
... or this brilliant photomontage which compares medieval knights in armour ...
... with ice hockey players!
the texts are by leopold hess (dates?), an author who worked regularly for the swiss tourist office.
herbert matter's style was less austere and more jokey ...
... than most swiss "constructive" graphic designs ...
... of later years which were not really ...
... meant to give you a good laugh, often not even a smile!
