printer: zollikofer & co., st. gallen
size: ?? x ?? cm
designer: rudolf hostettler

although this collection is about modernist book design of the 20th century, i occasionally sneak in interesting examples of traditional or neo-traditional typography of that era – like this one.

rudolf hostettler (1919-1981) was editor of the trade magazine "schweizerische graphische mitteilungen" or short "sgm", and his "sgm-books" were related publications. note the use of the traditional "long s" in the "sgm" logotype.

"type – a selection of types" is a trilingual book in english, french and german.

there is a "family tree" of (western) printing type development.

the main section consist of print samples: typefaces of several european typefoundaries – ...

... haas in münchenstein/basel, bauer in frankfurt/main and deberny & peignot in paris, among others, ...

... with detailed info about each typeface.

there is also an ad for book 418 by the same publishers.
