escher wyss, zürich / ravensburg / schio, 1960
size: ?? x ?? cm
designer: richard paul lohse
zurich-based company escher wyss was a major swiss turbine manufacturer. from the late 1930s until well into the 1960s most of the company's graphic designs was done by richard paul lohse (1902-1988), see also stories 102 and 558. here we have some issues of the company's perodical "escher syss mitteilungen" from the 1940-1960s, for which lohse created a standardised design and layout.
let's look at this 1960 special issue on the company's turbine research.
the cover with its square photos arranged in a 3x3 grid somewhat remind of lohse's abstract "9 square" paintings.
the photos are often of a great aesthetic quality.
a flexible layout with 3, 2 or 1 columns adapts easily to the variety of material.
when i was first leafing through this issue i got a big surprise: ...
... there is an article on the use of sensor data recording instruments for calibrating turbines, written by a "k. wiedler": ...
... my father konrad wiedler (1928-1989) was an engineer who worked for escher wyss in the 1950-60s.
