another overprinting photomontage cover so typical for the swiss büchergilde, ...
... designed by heinz ammann (dates?) who we have come across in book 611 where he used the same colour scheme.
apart from the ubiquitous akzidenz-grotesk, bold bodoni was another favourite typeface for titles, asymmetrically arranged of course.
this travel book about ethiopia ...
... was written by paul hartlmaier (1893-????), a well-german writer, photographer and film-maker who undertook expeditions to india and africa.
hartlmaier is also credited for most of the photos which are beautifully gravure printed.
note the nice "horizontal" layout with titles arranged at the outer margins, and tiny page numbers.
this photo of a camel is also used for the cover.
all photos are in two sizes, matching the layout grid.
a map of the area which is still much troubled today. note the unconventional typography of the bibliography.
