peter thoene is another pseudonym for oto bihalji-merin (1904-1993), thoene was the maiden name of his wife lisa. this book is a history of man's old dream to fly and how it became real. bihalji, a yugoslavian art historian (see story 63), was also a pilot.

richard paul lohse (1902-1988) is credited in the impressum for designing the dustjacket (which is also signed in script) and the cover. the jacket features a photomontage: the famous nike of samothrace and a biplane flying boat. the combination of black and white photos with a cloudy sky printed in blue is somewhat reminiscent of herbert matter's famous tourist posters and brochures. in the 1930s, both lohse and matter worked in the zurich zetthaus; matter left for the usa in 1936.

the typography of the inner pages (not by lohse) is nothing special.
