book (design) story #645
fritz wartenweiler:
fridtjof nansen
rotapfel-verlag, erlenbach/leipzig, around 1930
size: ?? x ?? cm
designer: walter cyliax (attributed)
a stunning modernist jacket for a biography of fridtjof nansen (1861-1930), the norwegian explorer and diplomate who won the peace nobel prize in 1922.
no designer is credited, however it is very likely that it was designed by either walter cyliax (1899-1945) or pierre gauchat (1902-1956).
cyliax and gauchat designed several books for the rotapfel-verlag (and the rentsch-verlag, both managed by eugen rentsch). i attribute it to cyliax.
the inside typography is rather old fashioned.
the biography was written by fritz wartenweiler (1889-1985), a swiss writer, pacifist, and pioneer of adult education.
