we have come across danish writer-explorer peter freuchen (1886-1957) before, see story 113.

"ivalu" is a fictionalized story about freuchen's inuit wife navarana who died in 1921 in the spanish flu epipdemic. the german edition was first published in 1931 by the büchergilde gutenberg, berlin.

after 1938 freuchen's books were banned in nazi germany. this copy is from the 1940 re-edition by the exiled büchergilde in zürich.

the main text is set in a "schwabacher" blackletter typeface ...

... and illustrated with ink-drawings by paul urban (1901- c.1938) who also designed numerous book covers for the universum-bücherei (e.g. book 229, and later for querido in amsterdam.
