this is a catalogue for an exhibition of british painter graham sutherland (1903-1980) at the kunsthaus zürich in 1953.

the cover design is based on a purple shape with orange and green rectangles, forming a letter "s", unrelated in style to sutherland's art which is in a more surrealist vein.

sutherland celebrated his 50 birthday that year. art critic herbert read (1893-1968) contributed a text.

the text pages are on yellow paper, the plates on coated white paper. sansserif typefaces are used throughout.

sutherland is also well-known for his portraits such as this one of sumerset maugham (1874-1965).

zürich-born graphic designer and artist (gottfried) honegger-lavater (*1917) is credited for the catalogue design.
