this impressive kunsthalle basel catalogue cover is not credited, however it is based on the identical poster design by emil ruder (1914-1970). the exhibition was about "japanese calligraphy and western signs". ruder's cover/poster combines a huge japanese calligraphic letter in black with a small artwork by paul klee in red. ruder had an affinity to japanese design culture (see story 695).

the title page features a tipped-in colour plate of a painting by fritz winter, and tiny sansserif type in a single size.

the catalogue pages are organized in two columns: texts in inner colums, pictures (fixed width, variable height) in outer columns.
