printer: zollikofer & co., st. gallen

designer: ives zimmermann
here two 1958 issues of "tm" magazine.
note how the design has changed from 1954 (see story 724): "gill sans" has gone, replaced by a more "swiss" grotesk.
interestingly, robert büchler shows some examples for "elemental design" – arranged in a 3-column grid similar to his 1954 "tm" redesign.
below some adverts, at the right one for the schwitters company, likely designed by karl gerstner.
the magazine covers show an "abstract", rhythmic arrangement of small type of the same size, very much in the vein of the swiss "concrete" art and poetry of the time.
the covers were designed by ives zimmermann (*1937), a basel school graphic designer who had worked for geigy and moved to barcelona in 1961.
above you see a typesetter's workplace of the "lead age".
this text spread gives a good impression of the asymmetrical page layout (including position of page numbers). there is an article by hans rudolf bosshard (*1929) on woodcuts.
below some design examples from the lausanne typesetters school which seem to prove that "swiss typography" was also practised in the french speaking part to some extent.
