two years after gerstner+kutter's "neue graphik" (story 37) and one year after neuburg's (story 88), josef müller-brockmann (1914-1996) published his book about modern graphic design. the cover is very similar, too, with its asymmeric title in large akzidenz-grotesk letters. the brownish-grey jacket with black and white type is actually quite "gerstner" (see story 16)

the cover and the title page repeat the jacket's trilingual book title and author's name in 48 point akzidenz-grotesk semi-bold.

Book image

text in three languages, but a four-column grid – leaving room for asymmetrically placed white space.

müller-brockmann's concert posters are among his most poetic "abstract" designs.

müller-brockmann was also a teacher for graphic design at the kunstgewerbeschule zürich; there are numerous reproductions of his students' works (below).
