paul martin:
im banne des sportes
büchergilde gutenberg, zürich, 1954
printer: genossenschaftsdruckerei zürich
size: 24 x 17 cm
designer: ferdi aeschbacher
swiss athlete paul martin won a silver medal over 800 meters at the olympics in 1924. in this book he remembers those glorious days and writes about his training methods.
another classic example of swiss 1950s typography. the style of the laminated cover with its montage of two monochrome photos printed across each other in different colours was often used in swiss typography, especially by richard paul lohse (see examples 52, 54 etc.).
sans-serif type, no paragraph indentations, bold page numbers – and beautiful gravure-printed photographs!
