book (design) story #142
robert th. stoll:
ein tag mit ronchamp
johannes-verlag, einsiedeln, 1958
printer: buchdruckerei vsk, basel
size: ?? x ?? cm
photographer: paul+esther merkle
designer: emil ruder
the last book was written by the architect who built the famous chapel feautured in this book: notre-dame-du-haut in ronchamp, france.
with its rounded, irregular forms, this 1950 building marks le corbusier's "organic style" – quite different from his "machines for living".
the beautiful photos are by paul and esther merkle. these basel-based photographers also contributed to book 56 which ...
... was co-designed by "basel school" typographer emil ruder (1914-1970) who did this one.
the multi-column layout with unjustified sans-serif leaves lots of white space. note the page numbers: their position depends on the number of columns on a page.
