hugo egon strassburger:
kinder
reimar hobbing, berlin, 1931
printer: w. büxenstein, berlin
size: 26 x 25 cm
designer: paul stadlinger
this 1931 book with text by german writer (of children songs) hugo egon strassburger (1877-1952, spelling also "strasbuger") contains a collection of 127 children photos mostly by reknowned berlin-based photographers of the time.
the typographic design of the entirely gravure-printed book is by paul stadlinger (who was a prolific book designer in the 1930s, but i have not found any more biographical details): sans-serifs on the cover and jacket, bold modern for the titles and page numbers inside the book, ...
... combinded with photos arranged in an imaginative way.
the photos on the jacket and above are by alexander binder, these below by becker & maas.
although the text about black kids ("they are always funny to watch") is somewhat patronizing by today's standards it is positive and not racist.
the photo above on the right is credited to laszlo moholy-nagy. the book was among the winners of the 50 most beautiful german books award.
