grete dexel, dr. walter dexel:
das wohnhaus von heute
prometheus-bücher, hesse & becker verlag, leipzig, 1928
printer: hesse & becker, leipzig
size: 19 x 13 cm
designer: walter dexel (cover, jacket + title)
modernist artist and graphic designer walter dexel (1890-1973) co-edited this great book on today's modern dwelling with his wife grete dexel.
the "prometheus-bücher" series had a standardised cover design by walter dexel – see book 249 for another example.
asymmetric titles in uppercase sans-serif type – typical for early new typography – are used on the cover and the impressive photographic dustjacket.
dexel probably also designed the title page – with asymmetric composition, sans-serif type, and the modernist "pb" logo also used on the cover and jacket (faded).
... while the rest of the book is set in fraktur (blackletter).
above houses designed by mies van der rohe and hans scharoun. below examples of "system corbusier" sliding windows, and a steel-framed design which is supposed to be easy to clean.
below left an interior of a weissenhof house designed by richard döcker (see story 166), ...
... and furniture by marcel breuer and mart stam.
