fritz müller:
im anfang war die zahl

büchergilde gutenberg, zürich, 1953
printer: genossenschaftsdruckerei zürich
size: 24 x 17 cm
designer: richard paul lohse (jacket)

this dustjacket by richard paul lohse (1902-1988) is one of his most impressive in this style: the overprinted photos are almost abstract, like his paintings. the orange-red and greenish-blue colour scheme reminds of georg salter who often used this contrast in his jackets and cover designs (see story 257).

Book image

the typeface is akzidenz-grotesk semibold, as usual. note how the colour scheme extends to the rear panel with a list of other books of the "research and life" series.

Book image

the cloth cover and the (standardised) typography are not related to lohse's jacket design.

Book image

the title of this book on mathematics means "in the beginning there was the number" by fritz müller (no dates known) who was a maths teacher at a zürich grammar school.
