donnerwetter – bergerbretter
sport berger, rotschwaige-dachau/münchen, around 1937
size: 21 x 15 cm
designer: (unknown)
the berger company, a bavarian manufacturer of skiing equipment, published these promotional catalogues in the late 1930s.
photos, layout and stencil typeface are in the modernist vein – at first sight these brochures could have been made before 1933. one has to read very closely to find expressions like "kraft durch freude" (strenght through joy) – a typical nazi ideology term.
the nazis accepted dynamic modernist visual designs to express the fascination of dynamic, "healthy" sports: skiing books were also among herbert bayer's last book designs before he left germany – see story 33.
