siegfried schmidt-joos (*1937) is a well-known writer of jazz, rock and pop related books.
this book on the history of jazz was first published in 1961. this bertelsmann edition is from 1963. the impressum credits horst bergmann (?) for the cover design.
the book design is strongly inflenced by the early new typography of the 1920s: asymmetric page layout with big page numbers and sans-serif (all lowercase on the cover only).
two examples of many great photos: bluesmen john lee hooker and t-bone walker.
