book (design) story #455
upton sinclair:
100%
malik-verlag, berlin, 1928
size: 19 x 13 cm
designer: john heartfield (jacket+cover)
the books by american socialist writer upton sinclair (1878-1968) are classics, as are the jacket designs by john heartfield (1891-1968) for the german editions published by the malik verlag, berlin.
this version sports a jacket with the statement "50'000 printed" on the front eith a handcuffed man lead away by a policeman, and hooded ku klux klan members on the back - both with a prominent u.s. flag.
note the heartfield designs for dos passos' "drei soldaten" and sinclair's "boston" of on the flaps.
as usual, the typography of malik books is not modernist, although the typeface is roman not fraktur. the "malik" logo is constructed from the letters.
