henry hoek:
all about st. moritz
orell füssli verlag, zürich / leipzig, 1932
size: 16 x 11 cm
photographer: albert steiner
designer: walter herdeg (cover)
this is the english edition of a tourist guide for st. moritz which previously had been published in german with different cover, see book 531.
this cover design is credited to walter herdeg (1908-1995), a swiss graphic designer and publisher probably best known for his joint work with walter amstutz. amstutz became director of the st. moritz tourist office in 1929.
a few years after this brochure amstutz and herdeg developed a highly distinctive visual identity for st. moritz, combining modernist photomontage and a baroquish sun in an eclectic style – see examples on this excellent travel brochure website. in 1944 amstutz and herdeg launched the famous "graphis" magazine.
henry hoek (1878-1951) was a german skiing pioneer who wrote several books on the subject.
above a list of 1932 hotel prices: the top locations were suvretta house, carlton, and the palace hotel with prices up to 75 swiss francs for a room with bath. today prices in these hotels are up to four figures ...
famous albert steiner (1877-1965) contributed some photos, ...
... and there are a couple of foldout panoramic drawings.
