book (design) story #497
herbert lüthy:
frankreichs uhren gehen anders
europa verlag, zürich/stuttgart/wien, 1954
printer: deutsche verlags-anstalt gmbh., stuttgart
size: 23 x 16 cm
designer: gottfried honegger (jacket)

herbert lüthy (1918-2002) was a swiss journalist and historian who lived in france after ww2. this rather critical book on the state of france was translated in several languages – the english edition has the title "france against herself".

the striking jacket design – like torn black paper over the tricolore with slab-serif title (clarendon, designed by hermann eidenbenz in 1953) – is credited to "honegger-lavater". i guess this refers to swiss graphic designer/artist gottfried honegger-lavater (*1917) rather than to warja honegger-lavater (1913-2007), his wife at the time and also a graphic designer/artist (see story 194).

this copy is a later 1956 issue, printed in germany ...

... in a traditional style.
