book (design) story #535
erna meyer:
die praktische küche
gewerbemuseum basel, 1930
size: 21 x 15 cm
designer: (unknown)
in the late 1920s, apart from zürich it was the town of basel which became a centre for the modernist design movement in switzerland. housing was an important subject for exhibitions (see book 532), and in basel it was the gewerbemuseum which organised events like this 1930 show on the practical kitchen (see also story 420 for another basel catalogue in this vein).
while the cover and identical title page (and some of the ads) are designed in early new typography style, ...
... the inner pages look more traditional.
the main text is by erna meyer-pollack (dates?), a pioneer of "rational" kitchen design in germany. the photo above shows the kitchen in j.j.p. oud's weissenhof houses.
