the first german edition of french author marcel proust's (1871-1922) famous à la recherche du temps perdu was published by berlin publishers "die schmiede" in 1926 (part 1 in two volumes) and 1927 (part 2).

most of the schmiede books were designed by georg salter (1897-1967).

the two editions are very different: the first one came in two volumes sporting the famous wavy banner jacket which salter used for the novels of the 20th century series.

unfortunately, this copy of the jacket is quite a wreck, only hold together by the brodart jacket cover. see the next story for a fine "schmiede" banner example.

note the "mirrored running man with hammer" logotype which was also used for later books in this series, ...
