book (design) story #557
archibald joseph cronin:
lucy moore
büchergilde gutenberg, zürich, 1947
size: ?? x ?? cm
designer: richard paul lohse
in the 1940s, the büchergilde zürich published several novels by the popular scottish author archibald joseph cronin (1896-1981).
"lucy moore" is a german translation of his "three loves" from 1932.
like the earlier novels (see stories 60 and 116), the book was again designed by richard paul lohse (1902-1988).
for this jacket lohse chose a photomontage of a leaf in front of a treeless landscape. note the horizontal/vertical arrangement of type on the jacket (and on the cover, in a scquare), somewhat reminiscent of lohse's style of abstract painting that emerged in the mid-1940s.
