this forst german edition of upton sinclair's (1879-1968) 1936 "coop – a novel of living together" was published by the exiled büchergilde gutenberg in 1937. note that both vienna and prague are still listed on the title page.

the jacket and frontis are woodcuts by ott rudolf schatz (1900-1961), an austrian artist who had worked for the berlin-based büchergilde before (see stories 58 and 59).

schatz and his jewish wife survived the nazi years under difficult circumstances, before returning to vienna after the war.
