arnold rüdlinger:
eble
kunsthalle basel, 1960
printer: benno schwabe & co., basel
size: 21 x 17 cm
designer: armin hofmann (cover)
this 1960 kunsthalle basel catalogue was designed by emil ruder (1914-1970) in "basel school" minimalist typography: ...
... a name in lowercase akzidenz-grotesk with an abstract drawing on white.
lots of white space also on the inside pages.
basel born painter theo eble (1899-1974) ...
... was a co-founder of the "gruppe 1933" (see our next story), and also exhibited with the "allianz" group of swiss modern artists.
after beginnings in a realist "new objectivity" style in the 1920s, eble's later work is more abstract.
the ad section employs a variety of typefaces, all in asymmetric typography. note the ad for "f. biesele" (above, maybe related to the basel-based graphic designer with this surname, see e.g. story 616) and "wohnbedarf basel" (below left) – typical examples of 1950s swiss style graphic design.
