book (design) story #693
(unknown) :
elektrisch kochen
verlag elektrowirtschaft, zürich, 1950
printer: gebr. fretz a.g., zürich
size: 21 x 15 cm
photographer: anita niesz
designer: alfred willimann
this 1950 propaganda brochure for "cooking electrically" published by the swiss electric power lobby organisation was the successor of the booklet in story 103.
it is aimed at housewives, to convince them of the advantages of "cooking, grilling, frying, baking, sterilising, dessicating" ...
... – claiming that electrical appliances are "more convenient, less dangerous, and of unmatched cleanliness".
the neat, modernist design is credited to alfred willimann (1900-1957), who taught typography and photography at the kunstgewerbeschule zürich, working closely with hans finsler.
the photographs credited to anita reisz (info?) reveal finsler's influence: i guess she must have known finsler's photographs first published in the 1940 edition of book 471.
included are some recipes with photos – e.g. for traditional swiss christmas cookies (above). soiled edges and water stains proof that the booklet has indeed been used in a kitchen!
