book (design) story #697
berchtold von grüningen, heiri steiner, walter staehelin:
gedächtnisausstellung / fritz bühler / pierre gauchat
gewerbemuseum basel, 1964
printer: kirschgarten-druckerei ag, basel
size: 21 x 15 cm
designer: walter daucher
in 1964 the gewerbemuseum basel honored two swiss graphic designers who had deceased only in their 50s: fritz bühler (1909-1963) who had worked in basel, ...
... and pierre gauchat (1902-1956) who had been based in zürich – see also story 592.
what both designers had in common: they were not dogmatic in their choice of means and styles – using figurative drawing and photography, modernist and more traditional typography, depending on what each job required.
the catalogue was designed by walter daucher (info?): sansserif set unjustified, as made popular by karl gerstner.
above gauchat's book jackets featured in our stories 669 and 698, with more examples of gauchat's stylistic diversity below.
below some posters designed by fritz bühler.
