we came across the "fototek" series of photo books in story 462. this is the second and last published book of this series, again beautifully designed by jan tschichold (1902-1974) in a very similar style.

this book features the work of aenne biermann (1898-1933), an immensly talented photographer who died at the young age of 34. aenne biermann-sternefeld came from a jewish background, and her husband's family ran a large department store in gera which was "aryanized" by the nazis in the 1930s.

today there is an aenne biermann prize for contemporary photography in germany.

several of the photos show biermann's two kids – below left her daughter.

again art historian/photographer franz roh (1890-1965) contributed the text – and the last of the 60 photos is a portrait of him (below right).
